How to Brew with 1Zpresso K-Plus

1Zpresso K-Plus is one of the premium hand grinders today and has been used by coffee professionals worldwide. We will find out what makes the K-Plus distinct from the rest and how to make better brews with it.

The 1Zpresso K-Plus

The body of the grinder is made of stainless steel and has a solid feel. The handle is well-made of aluminium alloy with a wooden knob.

One cool thing about owning the K-Plus is the Case. It’s rugged with neatly laid out compartments for all your accessories, tools and notes.

The heart of the 1Zpresso K-Plus is the 48mm stainless steel burr. It is called the ‘K Burr’ – a heptagonal conical burr, designed for consistency.

Adjusting the grind size is done by turning the Adjustment Ring, from 0 to 90 clicks, 0.022mm per click. The larger the number, the coarser the grind.

The Magnetic catch cup makes it easy and fast to release the coffee. It’s sturdy and has an add-on attachment for releasing your grounds into the portafilter.

1Zpresso grinder chart comparison

1Zpresso has been constantly innovating, and we can see from the chart where the products stand in comparison. For the K-Plus, K-Max and K-Pro, they share the same 48mm stainless steel burr and clicks design, however the K-Plus was made with espresso in mind and has a configurable magnetic catch cup for 51/58mm baskets.

Secondly, they differ in their cases – K-Plus comes with a travel bag, while K-Pro and K-Max, a cylinder bag.

It can be concluded that the 3 grinders result in the same grind and taste quality. If anyone has owned and compared the 3 grinders, let us know your thoughts on how they differ in grind experience. For more detailed info, check out K-Plus vs K-Pro vs K-Max by 1zpresso

Brewing with the 1Zpresso K-Plus

After trying out a few pour-over brews based on the grind chart, I did not get good results from 8-9 clicks. But at 7 clicks for medium grinds, the brews became more consistent across all drippers. I would go all the way to 9 for coarse grind. For espresso, I’ve had good results at 3.8, I think 3.5 – 4, is a good range.

Grinding is pretty quick, and it takes less than 30 seconds if you have 13-15g of coffee. I like the experience, and it was not too difficult for people like me with smaller hands.

1Zpresso K-Plus Daily Use & Calibration

I use the 1Zpresso K-Plus almost daily for brewing filter coffee. After each of grind, there is the static cling of grinds around the burr and I would it brush it off into the catch cup. You could use a RDT Spray to reduce this affect.

After about 3 weeks, I would recalibrate by seperating the parts and adjusting the magnetic ring until the screw fits to 0. It might be a process that requires effort to adjust the ring to precisely 0, but with some experience, it is easy to calibrate.

Grind Settings & Taste Results

The K-Plus has given consistent grinds that results in good brews. You would know if the grind size isn’t right when the taste of the coffee feels hollow or lacks in body. There were times I had set it too coarse, and the results shows a lack of body and strength.

The flow rate remains consistent and this shows that the grind consistency is good. From Origami it would be around 1:40, Flower and Kalita at 2:15.

I have had good brews at 7 (70 clicks) with 90° water temperature and this is a good starting point for standard pour overs. Check out the Brew Log for more.

Conclusion

How does this compare with other Hand grinders such as the Comandante? In regards to design, I would say 1Zpresso K-Plus wins in modern design. The handle, body and magnetic catch cup just feels superior in comparison to the Comandante.

Grind quality is consistent for great tasting filter and espresso coffee. That is not to say Comandante does not taste as good, but it would give a different taste profile. Overall, I would say 1Zpresso K-Plus is a precision grinder for those that want a consistent grind across espresso to filter coffee.
